Capital Area Transit (CAT)

  • Capital Area Transit Fare Increase Information

Capital Area Transit (CAT) has worked to keep bus fares constant for the past 8-9 years. During that time, costs to operate bus services have risen due to inflation, and customer fares have not kept pace. To close this growing gap, the Raleigh Transit Authority (RTA) has approved a fare increase for Capital Area Transit.

The increase will be implemented in two phases, the first on October 1, 2014 and then the second increase in Fall 2016. These increases will allow CAT to keep pace with inflation and continue to make improvements to bus services and facilities.

A Fare Equity Analysis has been prepared under federal guidelines for implementing Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that reviews how the proposed transit fare changes may affect minority and low-income populations. The Raleigh Transit Authority will determine an effective date at their July/August meeting. Details of the fare increases are listed below.

    FARE TYPE CURRENT 2014 2016
    Cash Fare $1.00 $1.25 $1.50
    Day Pass $2.00 $2.50 $3.00
    7- Day Pass* N/A $12.00 $14.50
    31- Day Pass $36.00 $45.00 $54.00
    Local Paratransit Services $2.00 $2.50 $3.00
    $25 Stored Value Card $20.00 $20.00 $20.00

*7- Day Pass to replace the 5-Day Pass.

    DISCOUNTED FARES:

    • 50% Discount with Approved ID:
      • Persons with Disabilities
      • Youth Ages 13-18
    • Fare Free
      • Youth Ages 12 and Under (with Approved ID if needed)
